The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), a member of College of Islamic Studies (CIS) in Hamad Bin Khalifa University, cordially invites you to the upcoming public lecture titled:
Women and Religious Knowledge: Producers or Consumers?
It will be held on February 18, 2020 from 7 to 9 pm in the auditorium at the College of Islamic Studies building.
Feminist studies have recently shifted the focus from women rights and their position in society to the role of women in producing religious knowledge. Thus, women active participation in research conferences and symposia has become a must and missing women in such events is now increasingly frowned upon. Since about three decades, women started to produce a distinctively feminist religious knowledge.
Against this background, speakers in this lecture will address questions like: What is the role of women in producing religious knowledge? Which factors affect women’s (non-)contribution to this type of knowledge? How can one understand the accidental or intentional absence of women’s contribution, for those who believe that this was the case in Islamic history? Can knowledge be gendered? How to evaluate the religious knowledge produced by women?
Speakers:
- Dr Nevin Reda, University of Toronto, Canada
- Dr Shuruq Naguib, University of London, SOAS, UK
- Dr Zahia Jouirou, Professor, FALAH, Manouba, Tunis
- Dr Ahmed al-Adawy, Assistant Professor, Faculty of divinity, ÇOMÜ University, Turkey
