
The Islamic world is undergoing through a stage whereas reform and renewal are very needed in various aspects of the life. So it is important to study the different reformist experiences and its achievements or failures to so that we can build on these experiences and achieve a cumulative knowledge in this regard.
Khair al-Din al-Tunisi’ (1820-1890) was one of the most prominent pioneers of Islamic reform in the 19th century. He stressed that Islam does not contradict with the modern civilization. Part of his features were his ability to combine between Islamic thought, management and political authority at the same time.
The lecture will critically and analytically explore al-Tunisi’s reformist theories and the importance he places on education, justice, freedom and al-Shura.
