The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), a member of College of Islamic Studies (CIS) in Hamad Bin Khalifa University, has hosted a lecture titled:
Women in Islamic thought: A critical Overview
It was hosted on Thursday, 29th of November 2018, at the College of Islamic Studies building in Qatar with the presence of deans, professors, scholars, students, researchers from CIS, CILE and Al-Qaradawi Center for Islamic Moderation and Renewal.
The lecture was the last session of the CIS Forum Lecture Series, and it was divided by two parts: The first part was presented by Dr. Mawahib Abubakr, Research Program Manager at CILE and the second part was given by Chauki Lazhar, Deputy Director at CILE.
In the first part of the lecture, Dr. Mawahib has explored the contribution of the Muslim scholars who are part of what is known as ‘Islamic feminism’ that was launched in early 1990s by Muslim women scholars from different countries, who are committed to their religious faith and who are working towards the production of alternative, gender-sensitive religious knowledge.
On the other hand, in the second part of the lecture, Chauki Lazhar has attempted to locate the place and conception of women in classical Islamic scholarship, especially Fiqh and Tafsir, followed by a critical review of the modern approaches in reading Islamic founding texts dealing with gender issues.
