[Update: Photos + Video] Public Lecture “Shari'a and Freedom in Changing Times"

The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), a member of Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies in Hamad Bin Khalifa University cordially invites you to its upcoming public lecture entitled: “Shari'a and Freedom in Changing Times”.  This event will be held on May 25th, 2016.  From 7 to 9 pm in QFIS Auditorium, Education City.

Two schools of thought are currently disputing over the application of Shari'a: a secular one that perceives Shari'a as an antonym of freedom, and a Salafi one that perceives freedom as an antonym of Shari'a. Some secularist reduces the Revelation to a historical phenomenon that can be left behind, which is islamically impossible; while some Salafists gave Islamic history the power of Revelation and they are trying to copy it today, which is humanly impossible. Within the clash of the two impossibilities, the application of Shari'a has been lost, and the Muslim identity has been split. So what is Shari'a? What does the application of Shari'a mean? What should be the position of Shari'a in the constitutions of the majority-Muslim countries? How to distinguish between morality and legality in Shari'a?  What is the role of the political authority, the Muslim jurists, and the society at large, in the application of Shari'a? Will the current context of political change influence Muslims' reinterpretation of Shari'a in a reforming way that will serve their societies and reconcile them with the rest of humankind?

Dr. Mohamed El-Moctar Shinqiti, Associate Professor of Islam and Political Ethics at the Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) will be moderating the lecture. Renowned scholars will be participating include: Dr. Ahmad Al-Raissouni, Vice President of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, Dr. Mohamed Fadel, Law Professor at the University of Toronto, Canada and Dr. Mohammed Tawfiq, Researcher at Namaa Center Research and Studies, Beirut.
