The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), member of College of Islamic Studies (CIS) in Hamad Bin Khalifa University, cordially invites you to its upcoming public lecture entitled:
Migrant Labour Reforms in Qatar: ongoing issues of rights and ethics
This event will be held on May 23rd, 2017, from 7 to 9 pm in College of Islamic Studies’ Auditorium, Education City. The lecture will be presented by Dr. Ray Jureidini, Professor of Migration, Human Rights and Ethics in CILE.
The lecture will provide an overview and analysis of the recent reforms that came into force in December 2016, stemming from Law No. (21) of 2015, On the Entry, Exit, and Residency of Foreign Nationals. This includes the right of employees to leave employers without their permission at the end of their contract period. The speaker will give an assessment of the argument that, along with changes to exit visa requirements and the earlier introduction of the wages protection system, this has meant the end of the controversial kafala system. The lecture will also address ongoing legal and ethical problems in the system of foreign labour recruitment.
